Let's have a conversation

Frequently Asked Questions about Zero Protocol™

Hi. I’m Paul Tanner.I’m a counseling psychologist, and I’m the creator of our unique treatment program called Zero Protocol.Zero protocol is my passion in life. There are a lot of treatment programs that have been created which are very effective around the world at stopping behavior, the addictive behavior, and perhaps healing the trauma that caused it and that finding the reasons connecting the dots in the past as to why this problem exists.

Evidence based practices following new science of neuralscience, epigenetics and quantum theory that show us that we can transform our lives so much more than was previously believed. So we put a lot of focus and energy on helping the guest connect with their potential in life their limitless potential to create the ideal version of themselves

Addiction is a mystery to us all. It’s extraordinary how, given that all human beings have one thing in common we all want to experience happiness and avoid suffering. And we’re very bad at doing it generally speaking. I believe that addiction is looking for happiness in the wrong places. It’s coping with the reality which is unbearable. And very simply, a definition could be this that somebody discovers that taking substance is relieve an unbearable reality. So they begin to practice this relief and it becomes habitual. But what it does is, it becomes a priority in itself, which replaces the other priorities, such as family and work and help in life, and is continued even in the face of ongoing problems and negative consequences. It’s baffling to the person experiencing it, and it’s also very, very confusing for the people around him that love him or her

By watching their behavior. If you notice that they their priorities in life have changed, perhaps they’re falling off in their performance at work or in their home life, in their business. Perhaps their body is being neglected, perhaps they’re living poorly. Then you know that something’s wrong and it’s associated with continuous substance use. Then we could probably call it a substance use disorder, which is an addiction.

It’s very difficult because when we love somebody and we want to help them, we very often try to support them in ways that are clumsy and unuseful to the person suffering from the condition. The best way is to encourage them, encourage them try and inspire them towards a better life, and let professionals such as ourselves get them started. And you will be informed. At zero protocol in this part of the zero protocol program, there is a family segment or where friends and family and close people can be informed as to how best to support the guest on their journey as they get into their new phase of life.

Well, because addiction is a slow death. It sounds dramatic, but you only need to turn on the news to know that that’s true. Addicts, alcoholics, people with compulsive disorders report they’re never quite sure when they reach the point of no return and it started getting out of control. Once it’s out of control, quite honestly, the future is bleak. People do not wake. People with addiction do not wake up one morning and suddenly they’re better. It doesn’t happen. It’s sometimes considered to be a continuous and progressive disease. But it can be treated.

It depends on a lot of factors. For example, is the person completely off the drugs that they were using when they come to us, which is what we prefer. If that’s the case, then four weeks would probably be the minimum. We prefer six weeks. Four weeks has become a set product, which the industry offers, but only based on American insurance policies. Actually, 28 days is the shortest period. Six weeks is a much more comfortable period. And then recovery needs to be practiced once you leave.

Zero protocol has a great advantage because we we deal with one client at a time. A lot of people say they do. We actually do. We only deal with one client at a time. So we create a collaborative treatment program which involves the clinical team. After the assessment, it involves the guests themselves and it involves that close family members, the people who are close to them. So that we can discuss at the beginning of treatment what their treatment will look like. A standard day would include some body movement, completely appropriate to whatever state of fitness you’re in or whatever age you’re in. It would involve therapy, we offer about 15 hours of therapy a week which is a lot more than most treatment centers of any sort. And there’ll be body movement. There’ll be some meditation, simple meditation practices. There’ll be some educationals about the science of the mind, the conscious and subconscious mind. And there’ll be relaxation as well. The client is able, in the collaborative treatment program to choose the the activities which best suit them, which resonate for them, because it can be completely tailor made. If there’s only one client at a time.

So our program is bespoke, which is a mysterious word, perhaps to many people listening. Bespoke means one client at a time. It’s tailor made to suit the individual who comes to us.This is very important because the client will have a whole team of people who lovingly support them on their journey. It mean which is some people, when they come to a facility that treats addictions, they comply they comply to the rules, but they don’t necessarily have their heart in it. And when they leave, there’s a big chance of them going back to their old life. When the client is fully behind and understands why they’re doing it makes it a lot easier to how to do it. And if you can inspire the client with the possibility of a future life that they have in their hands, they are much more likely to become fully engaged with the program. So we offer a loving team, a skillful, highly qualified team which are right behind the client. They’re just there for you. There is nobody else. And for family members, if they ever come during the treatment, stay.

When they arrive, the very first thing we do is make somebody comfortable, obviously. And we create the collaborative treatment plan. And during that time, there will be suggestions from the clinical team regarding therapy. There will be suggestions about exercise moving, the body because it is important to move the body every day to keep inspired and to keep feeling full of life. But then there’s a whole variety of extra activities which are inspiring. Bali is a very very inspiring place and we’re set in beautiful rice fields. So basically the client can choose from activities like treks up the volcano, they could choose to go for walks in the rice fields, they can choose to go surfing. they can choose to learn diving. These are all extra things they can do. They can have art therapy with famous artists. We’re very connected with the cultural world in Ubud. And they can go to the famous water temples, which are renowned the world over for their color and beauty. And they can even have a water healing in the temple. It’s really up to the client. What does the client want to do in their spare time? We will advise that those activities be more inspiring than just shopping. There, of course, there are great restaurants around. If the client chooses to do that, that’s okay and we’ll take them wherever they want to go. But it’s essential we will advise keep doing inspiring things. One thing we do want is that we want our guests when they leave treatment, not just to feel they’ve got over a problem in their lives, but for them to feel they’ve had an amazing experience which they will never forget.

It’s really quite amazing the levels of transformation using the zero protocol approach, because we do believe in the science that is now present showing us that levels of transformation are much, much greater than we ever believed were possible before. For example, in we shoot back about 30 years, it was honestly believed that by the time someone was in their thirties, 35, for example, their brain was wired to be a certain way, their personality. We now know science now shows us that is simply not true.We can continue to transform ourselves up until the day we pass away. And there are methods to use this. So our guests are able to understand their emotions, their thoughts, where they actually arise in the body. They understand the science behind it, and by using simple techniques, they really are able to create and begin to believe in the potential they have to become the ideal version of themselves to be their own hero on their journey.

The team are a loving team and they are very passionate about the zero protocol approach. I’ve carefully picked the team so that they’re all impassioned by this belief in transformation. There is nothing jaded about our approach. We’re very excited about the potential for everyone who comes to us to completely transform their lives. And we’ve seen really amazing, happy results. Families that are suddenly coherent where they were previously incoherent, work possibilities improving, health increasing dramatically. Honestly, this program is a revival for the spirit.

This really depends on our consulting psychiatrist who will look carefully and work with me to understand which medications might, in the case of somebody coming to us on medication, prescribed medication. We will be very careful and discuss with the client and with the psychiatrist as to what is the best approach. And sometimes medication might be necessary, but in the most part, we believe that once the addiction is treated and the person is able to begin to believe in creating a future for themselves at that point, often the need for medication does fall away. We can rewire our brains using the zero protocol approach.

In my 30 years of experience of working in the field, I discovered about ten years ago that actually the standard approach being used in the industry today need to be updated. So I studied a lot and found that recent science, such as neuroplasticity, neurogenesis, epigenetics and quantum theory prove that our ability to transform ourselves are much, much greater than we previously thought. So we have created a blend where we have kept what works in more traditional treatment methods but we’ve added the emphasis on creating a future because most treatment for addiction focuses on two things. One, the incidence of relapse, like it’s really common for people to relapse once they’ve been an addict. And the other is denial. I haven’t got a problem. Now, these two focuses have meant that that treatment generally really hits hard at the problem of addiction. Remember, you’re an addict, you’ve got to be really aware of it for the rest of your life and that is successful, but it pays very little attention to what new science is telling us that we have the power and the potential to transform our lives beyond anything expected. We literally can become the hero in our own journey.

Part of the zero protocol program is a series of Zoom contacts because our clients come from all over the world. A series of Zoom contacts over or a package, perhaps weekly once they’ve left. It’s very, very important that every client takes this offer up and continues to become engaged because it is shown that the weak point of residential treatment is when somebody goes away from their home, they go away from their problems. They’re in a beautiful place such as Bali. It’s quite easy to feel very recovered and very well quite quickly. But in going back to their home, their family, their problems, their wife or their husband; they very often find they get caught in the same currents as before. So it’s very important that they stay connected with us and we are passionate about being available to continue helping people once they’ve left. People say, these people have actually said this in reviews about us, that we’re like a family. You become part of our family. We become part of your family. We are there for you to transform your life completely.

Significant transformation in our lives is always difficult and challenging because change is challenging for us all. But our approach and the zero protocol approach of one client at a time is designed for high earning individuals who are in the spotlight, quite often carrying a lot of pressure of their lives, financial pressure, etc., etc. So we honor them with creating a comfortable and loving environment where they have their own chef, a dedicated chef. They have very caring people around them day in, day out. We are compassion based. We use positive psychology. There is no shaming and blaming of any sort. So we help you through the challenging period. And there generally is a challenging period. There’ll be after a week or two weeks a moment when quite often people feel like giving up, but we will be there to support you, to support this person, to continue the journey and to know that it will be the most worth while month they’ve ever spent in their lives.

To be completely honest, it’s I’m allowed to say this because a dear friend of mine, Tim. His name is a Avicii. He’s very well known and he’s written a biography has been written about him, which describes the treatment process I went through with him. And it was extremely disturbing for me when I saw his demise and I saw that he had died. He died about two years after I’d treated him. And it was a big shock to me because he had maintained contact with me.We’d had telephone calls, but not any visits. And when he died, I began to understand something’s missing in this world of recovery. There’s something that didn’t help him. He didn’t get the help he need. That drove me to search extensively and find out how we can, how we can grab hold on to the potential we all have in our own lives in a thrilling way. So we’re not just recovering from a problem. We’re moving very quickly into creating a new, happy, fulfilled life for ourselves. And I so wish that my dear friend Tim could experience that.

Family is really, really important. It’s vital that the family needs to understand the process that a family member is going through when they’re going through treatment. They need to feel part of that process, not to interfere with it, but to be informed by it and have their say to be able to explain their own difficulties in and understanding the situation. Because above all, addiction, an addict’s behavior is disappointing and baffling. Many, many people get hurt, not just the addict alone. So we have a family component where the family is actually encouraged to come to Bali to experience what their family member is going through and be educated and helped to understand how to support in an ongoing way that recovery once the family member goes home.

The best support that family or friends can give someone who’s suffering from addiction is not judgmental, it’s not pressure, it’s not nagging; but it’s inspiring, motivating that that family member or their loved one to get the help they need. Encourage them to understand that they’re not coming to a cold institution with a lot of other people around. They’re coming to a place where they will be the center of everybody’s attention in terms of they will be taken care of by a loving team and everything will be adapted to their needs.Treatment does not have to be boot camp. It can be a loving experience and a very comfortable one.

Well, I’m a counseling psychologist, and I’ve worked in the field of addiction for 30 plus years. In that time, I’ve worked in different treatment centers. I’ve had my own private practice, and I’ve designed programs for facilities in Asia and in Europe. I’ve been attached to some of the most exclusive treatment centers in the world as a consultant and as a case manager. And I feel I know the terrain inside out. This is what led me to identify what I believed to be the weakness in the industry currently. And it inspired me to create zero protocol to try and deal with that perceived weakness.

Yes, we do. We treat a range of mental health disorders which we believe with using our consultant psychiatrist, that we’re capable people who will respond to our methods. Very often we get we deal with executive burnout, where high profile figures find the pressures of their lives just simply too much, and they experience listlessness, a lack of energy and actually a depression. So we deal with people who’ve lost the compass in life. So we are agents of inspiration. And it’s very, very worthwhile for somebody who feels that they’ve lost their way somehow. They’ve lost their power to come to us so that they can be revitalized and energized and believe in a new potential, so that they can create the life of their dreams.

If you’re looking at this video. It’s really important you choose carefully if you want to get help. We all know that. Perhaps the most important thing is a sense of goodness and fit between the facility you’re thinking of going to and yourself. Check it out. Choose carefully. The first thing to do would be make an inquiry and perhaps book a video or a Zoom assessment session at no cost so that you can get a sense of if we can help you or not. Get a sense for yourself. See if we touch something in your heart. We touch some kind of inspiration in you because you are worth it. Take the next step wherever you decide to go. Take the next step and do it.

The unique modalities that we use at zero protocol are methods so that the client can access the subconscious mind, understand how brain waves work, understand basic neuroscience, the science of feelings and and thoughts, how they loop together, they’re carefully studied techniques which are very easy to master. When you understand what’s happening inside you, you’re much more able to do something about it. And so we we encompass this new level of science, make it very easily accessible to everybody. It’s really not hard. It’s quite simple. But we’re focusing on the creation of a new sense of self, an ideal version of yourself.

Asking is a very good start. Get information. Find out as much as you can. Inquire. Book an assessment. It’s free. You’ve got nothing to lose. And you will be able to identify whether you have a problem or not. That’s treatable. You are worth the effort. It will transform your life.

There’s a very nice saying which expresses the frustration family members often feel around this baffling condition. It’s you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. It’s so frustrating when everybody except for the addict, seems to recognize the addiction. All you can do is lovingly support them to check it out, bring their attention to an awareness that help is available. Shame is a terrible enemy of recovery. There’s nothing to be ashamed about having this disease or this condition. Lovingly encourage them that change is possible. Transformation is possible. Full recovery is possible. And then allow them to make their own decision.

Make an inquiry. Get the information, the basic information. Start a dialog. And if it feels right, book an assessment. I’ll talk to you and we’ll see if there’s a goodness of fit between the zero protocol approach and your needs. You’ve got nothing to lose, and you’re worth it.

It’s such an exciting time to be alive. Now, if anybody wants to transform their lives. Religion and science historically has been separated. But recent science is now showing that spiritual practices of whatever creed.A very, very effective. So at zero protocol, we demystify the mystical. We encourage people to find the spirit within them, revive their spiritual life. So all religions are welcome. We do believe that there’s a spiritual solution which will guide you.

Of course, any psychological problem will involve our sense of spirit, our sense of who we are. So really, all recovery programs are a spiritual in that they’re dealing with your spirit and your heart. We use very simple, distilled science to understand spiritual practices so that they become accessible to everybody of whatever creed. Simple techniques where we focus our mind, we understand the conscious and the subconscious mind and how our addictions lie beneath the surface as programs running in the background, in our subconscious mind. The spiritual side of it is that we learn how to reprogram those negative programs in our subconscious.

There is zero conflict because we offer bespoke or one client at a time treatment, it means the entire team is there for you adapting to your background, to the social status, to your nationality, to the religion that you grew up with. We encompass it all. We can adapt to it all. There is zero conflict in that area.

We deal with high earning clients, people who are under pressure because of the status they have. We deal with celebrities. We deal with successful businessmen. Generally, the price of our treatment is higher than a lot of treatment centers that offer group therapy. So we offer huge discretion, complete discretion, confidentiality, and we adapt to the needs of high earning individuals.

The treatment is located in a small village in a very, very private, secluded villa. Our staff are highly trained for utmost discretion. No one will ever know what you’re doing or why you’re with us. It’s a very, very strong policy we have because our guests are high profile and have a great need for complete confidentiality. We even get celebrities. So we’re very well trained as a team to protect confidentiality and complete discretion.

Our clients repeatedly say that it’s the most valuable thing, the best investment they’ve ever made in their lives. I believe this to be true. The consequences of leaving some mental health issues and addiction untreated are so obvious. It’s a downward spiral. So intervention is very, very necessary. If you choose zero protocol, you will have a loving, scientific, evidence based treatment, a model which will help you to completely create a new chapter in your life so that you become the most ideal versionof yourself. It will be the best investment you’ve ever made.

A huge amount of facilities offering treatment for addiction use group therapy. There are pros and cons to this group therapy creates a community of peers who can help each other on their journey. It also reduces costs for the facility. We do not offer group therapy. We do bespoke therapy, which is one client at a time, which means that we are free to abandon standard rules and create a treatment environment which tailor fits everybody who comes to us. The activities that they do, the way they’re treated, you get a tremendous amount of personal attention. More than up to 15 hours of therapy per week. If you want that much with different therapists tailor made activities around the island of Ibiza. So no we don’t have groups. We lose the group dynamic, but we benefit so much from our one client at a time approach.
